The conductor was responsible for checking tickets on passenger trains and formerly also for accompanying freight trains. Following the introduction of one-man operation in regional trains, fewer conductors were needed, and on long-distance traffic, their work centred increasingly on customer services. The term “conductor” was therefore dropped in favour of “Reisezugbegleiter/-in” (train attendant). The tram conductor on the other hand has disappeared entirely.
