Crossing keeper

Crossing keepers a great deal of responsibility: They had to close the railway crossing in good time and reopen the road to traffic once the train had passed. However, this job was looked down on in the railway hierarchy and was therefore frequently carried out by housewives as a part-time job. The replacement of many level crossings by over- or underpasses and the automation of the remaining crossing gates led to the disappearance of this job in the 1990s.
