Flight engineer

As the third man in the cockpit, the flight engineer was responsible for monitoring the jet engines, the fuel supply and cabin pressurisation. The job title used at Swissair was initially “Bordmechaniker” (on-board mechanic), then “Bordtechniker” (on-board-technician) and finally “Flight Engineer” or “F/E” for short. With the replacement of the last Boeing 747 and DC-10s by aircraft with a two-man crew this job disappeared in Switzerland
