The stoker on a steam locomotive was clearly subordinate to the driver. He stood on the left of the footplate and was responsible for tending the fire. He also had to lubricate the locomotive bearings before setting off and at intermediate stops. Every locomotive driver began his training as a stoker, but not every fireman became a driver. The withdrawal from service of the last steam locomotive in 1968 also saw the disappearance of the fireman at SBB
